Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool's introduction to the MCU has given us a fun and nostalgic love letter, paying homage to the old glories of the 20th Century Fox era, while also playing with the new possibilities that Disney now has at its disposal.

The jokes and references come so fast that even the most ardent fans might miss some of the jokes. If you consume pop culture and celebrity gossip, you'll be well served. This movie is designed to make those devotees laugh. The Deadpool movies have always had a tender heart, despite their edgy humor and use of violence.

Sentimentality abounds. Deadpool (Reynolds) wants purpose and meaning, and must make the leap from wanting to matter so he doesn't lose Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) to being a true hero. Wolverine (Jackman) is also on a journey of rediscovery after a catastrophic failure.

There's nothing new in the story or the characterizations, but it's presented with a Deadpool twist. Emma Corrin and Matthew MacFadyen as the main villain are outstanding and their performances are very enjoyable, however like most MCU villains, the substance doesn't match the form.

The film is endearing, largely due to the numerous cameos it throws at the audience. While it might seem like it relies too heavily on these tricks, it works in the context of the film.

Deadpool & Wolverine is a movie designed to entertain and please fans, though it doesn't offer any answers about the future of the superhero genre. Mostly, it's here to give us a good time.

PS. Yes, there is a post-credits scene. It's not crucial to the next MCU movie, but it's a lot of fun.
